Corpus Christi Police Chief Retires; Interim Named

Corpus Christi Assistant Police Chief David Blackmon takes over May 3

An interim police chief has been named following the retirement of Corpus Christi Police Department Chief Mike Markle. A 30-year veteran of the department, Markle was named chief following the death of Chief Floyd Simpson, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on Texas 361 on May 3, 2015.
Replacing Markle, at least in the interim, will be Assistant Police Chief David Blackmon. He will take over May 3, when Markle officially leaves for a new job in the private sector.
Blackmon has served the CCPD in various positions since 1989. He has over 31 years of police experience, 11 of those years in leadership roles. He has served as assistant chief since 2018.
The city will soon begin a national search for Markle’s replacement.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to Chief Mike Markle for his stellar service to our community,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said in a news release. “His distinguished career of over 30 years with the city of Corpus Christi has played a vital role in our public safety. His leadership will be sorely missed. All of us at the city of Corpus Christi wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
