Improvements to bring stadium up to MLB standards
The Corpus Christi City Council recently approved $701,800 for capital improvements that will bring Whataburger Field into compliance with Major League Baseball standards.
Home of the minor league Corpus Christi Hooks, the stadium project will be funded by the Type A Board, which uses sales tax money to support business development.
The scope of work includes upgraded field lighting, a new clubhouse for women personnel, and renovations to the visitor center. Construction will begin after the next season and be complete in November 2022.
Major League Baseball took over as the governing body of the 120 minor league baseball teams at the start of the 2021 season. Previously, teams were managed by the National Association of Baseball. MLB developed standards to create a more consistent work environment for all minor league teams. Facilities will be measured for compliance via a tiered grading scale and have three years to meet the requirements.
Whataburger Field has already met some of the basic requirements with recent improvements through the Type A Board. Additional funding will bring it closer to the new standards.
