The Corpus Christi Visitor Information Center opens its doors to the public Dec. 1 in its new Water Street Market location. A one-of-a-kind mural will be unveiled at the same time, adding to the tapestry of existing murals that currently decorate downtown Corpus Christi.
Local artists were asked to submit their designs for the 10-foot-by-10-foot indoor mural by the end of October.
"We wanted a mural that highlights the vibrancy of our culture and how Corpus Christi is such an artistic and vibrant community," said Emily Zertuche, senior creative strategy director.
The mural must be ready by Nov. 15, Zertuche said, to be prepared for the Dec. 1 grand opening celebration.
Visit Corpus Christi provided a specific color palette for the artist to incorporate into the design as well as a primed and painted blank sheetrock wall in the most neutral tone of the palette. A $2,000 commission will be paid to the artist for the work. Images of the artwork will be used in national marketing and publicity campaigns with credit given to the artist.
“Our mission is to put Corpus Christi on the map and show how we are different from Galveston or South Padre Island,” Zertuche said. “Having a local artist to show these qualities in a mural that will be displayed in our new Visitor Information Center is so important."
