Sailboat regatta on Corpus Christi Bay July 20-23
More than 40 boats have entered the 2021 J/22 World Championship, and races start at 11 a.m. each day Tuesday-Friday, July 20-23, at the Corpus Christi Yacht Club. Practice runs are allowed on the course starting at 1 p.m. Monday, July 19.
Nine races are scheduled with a maximum of three races to be sailed each day per boat. Four races constitute a series, and if six or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of its race scores excluding its worst score.
The J/22 is a type of sailboat and the event itself is called a regatta, which is defined as a series of boat races, typically with rowed or sailed boats.
The Corpus Christi Yacht Club has hosted several regattas in recent years. In 2019, the yacht club hosted the Etchells World Sailing Championships. In 2018, it was home to the Youth Sailing World Championship.
Mark Foster, the Yacht Club pro of the race, is a past J/22 World Champion and a three-time winner of the St. Petersburg Trophy for race management. Foster has sailed and raced in the Corpus Christi Bay for over 50 years. He currently serves on the International Sailing Federation as an international race officer and has done so for nearly eight years.
Spectators can watch the event from any of the parks, beaches, or bars and restaurants that offer a view of the bay along Shoreline Boulevard and Ocean Drive.
Corpus Christi is not new to sailing. Every Wednesday at 6 p.m., sailors meet for a weekly regatta, also hosted by the yacht club.
