Linda P. Villarreal became the newest member of the Del Mar College Board of Regents on June 11 after she was appointed to fill the at-large position left vacant by the death of Regent Hector “Coach” Salinas. The term runs through 2024. Salina, 76, died April 30 from complications of multiple illnesses.
Dr. Villarreal is co-president and owner of Ed-Point LLC and has 43 years of educational experience as a former classroom teacher with Kingsville Independent School District, principal with Driscoll ISD, and assistant superintendent of instruction and superintendent of schools with Brooks County ISD. She also served as deputy director and executive director for the Education Service Center, Region 2, located in Corpus Christi.
Currently, she teaches as an adjunct professor with the College of Education at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in the areas of administration and leadership at the graduate level. She also serves as a national conference speaker and trainer as well as a keynote for regional, state, and national educational institutions.
She was a board member and chairperson for the Southwest Educational Development Lab for a four-state region (Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas) from 2003 to 2013. Currently, Villarreal is a board member of the Rural School Innovation Zone that encompasses three rural South Texas independent school districts.
A Corpus Christi native, Villarreal attended Roy Miller High School and Del Mar College. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Education and a master’s degree in secondary education from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in educational leadership from the joint program offered by Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She is also a Texas Education Agency-approved provider for school board training and holds professional superintendent, mid-management, and provisional elementary certifications.
The Del Mar College Board of Regents includes nine regents. Five regents represent specific geographic districts, and four serve at-large. The Del Mar College District includes all of the areas in the Calallen, Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, Tuloso-Midway, and West Oso independent school districts.
