Corpus Christi’s special election for mayor — a first for the city — has run smack dab into the 80th annual Buc Days Illuminated Night Parade. Both are set for Saturday, May 6, so elections officials have been urging residents to vote early. And since early voting ends Tuesday, May 2, you better hurry.
A record number of voters have made it to the polls so far, announced election officials. After five days of early voting, 8,065 people cast their ballots. Compared to the primary election in 2016 — also a spring election — 8,038 voters cast early votes during the same time period.
The last time Corpus Christi held a single issue election was in 2013 — a bond issue for Destination Bayfront. The 11,600 voters who went to the polls defeated the issue by a wide margin. Officials say they are expecting this many, if not more voters, by the time polls close in Saturday’s special election.
Candidates in alphabetical order are:
• Mark Di Carlo, attorney
• Margareta Fratila, owner of European Floral Design
• Jonathan Garison, assistant principal at Browne Middle School
• James Hernandez, master electrician and owner of Landmark Electric Co.
• Reynaldo “Ray” Madrigal, retired photographer
• Nelda Martinez, owner of Adlen Entreprises, an asset management company
• Joe McComb, owner of McComb Relocation Services and current at-large council member
• Larry White, retired chemical engineer, Chemours part-time contract engineer
If one of these eight doesn’t get at least 50.1 percent of the vote May 6, a run-off election will be held June 24.
