When the Art Museum of South Texas opens its doors for the first time in 2016, it should have its new children’s Creation Station open for use. Parts of the improved and relocated children’s area are already providing space for young people to let their creative juices flow, said education curator Linda Rodrigues. But more is in store.
“We are moving our upstairs interactive Artcade downstairs to be part of Creation Station,” Rodrigues said. “We have a room ready for it, we are waiting for some new technology and equipment that may not be here until New Years.”
A black-box theater has been completed, hosting productions during summer camps and school visits. The walls and ceiling of the square room are painted black to allow for performances against a single wall, in the round, or in whatever configuration needed for visual and performing art presentations.
“It’s amazing what a little paint will do,” Rodrigues said.
One goal of the revived and upgrade children’s section is to introduce young people to fine art.
“We want to provide a space and a chance to learn more about the exhibits we have on view,” Rodrigues said. “Children are certainly a big part of our audience.”
An ADA family restroom was added so that moms would not have to take babies and toddlers to the second floor when nature calls.
“Our moms really appreciate that,” Rodrigues continued.
The Art Museum of South Texas is located at 1902 N. Shoreline Blvd. in the S.E.A. District in downtown Corpus Christi. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday; 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday; closed Monday.
