Lace up those hiking boots and head to a nearby state park for a First Day Hike on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Hikes are about 1-2 miles long. First Day Hikes are guided by state park staff and volunteers and include insight on native plants, animals, and park history.
For all hikes, bring drinking water and wear weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Hikes are free with a park entrance fee. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
Three Coastal Bend state parks offer First Day Hikes:

8:30-9:30 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Goose Island State Park

Rockport
Meet at Turks Cap Trail parking lot near site #157.
Park entrance fee is $5 per person; children 12 and younger get in free. Leashed pets are welcome.

10-11:30 a.m.
Choke Canyon State Park

Keep an eye out for migrating birds on this hike along Choke Canyon’s trails and the lake’s edge. Bring your own binoculars and bird identification book.
Meet at the rock jetty next to the Calliham boat ramp.
Approximately 1.5 miles of easy to moderate trails. Ages 6 and older welcome as well as friendly pets on leashes.

Meet at Catfish Cove Trailhead for a guided 1-mile hike along the Catfish Point Trail.
