Every day is a good day to fly a kite along the Coastal Bend shoreline. Stop by a souvenir shop for a colorful kite, and pick any beach in Corpus Christi to lift your kite up, up and away.
Here are some tips from the experts on how to catch the perfect breeze:
First, set up your kite. Beginners should start with a traditional diamond-shaped kite with a single string. They’re more stable, and young flyers will have better control. Make sure your kite has a tail so it can handle the strong winds on the beach.
Second, choose a big, open space for liftoff. Make sure you’re clear of trees, power lines and other obstructions. And, definitely don’t fly a kite in a lightning storm!
Third, figure out which way the wind is blowing. Turn your back to the wind and hold up your kite as high as you can until it catches. Be patient! Don’t throw it in the air; gently release it.
Finally, once your kite starts to rise, let the line out bit by bit. Keep the line tight! If there’s any slack, the kite will begin to waver and likely crash. Don’t become discouraged if you don’t fly it on the first try. Learning to fly a kite is definitely a trial-and-error activity. Once you perfect your kite-flying form, watch it soar through the sky!
