Forty minutes after going on sale, the latest Selena product sold out — and it won’t even be available until March 2021. Funko Pop announced its first-ever Selena Quintanilla figurine in conjunction with the debut of the Netflix original show “Selena: The Series,” which became available for viewing Dec. 4.
Two versions of the vinyl figurine are available, one in the Tejano star’s iconic purple jumpsuit worn at the Astrodome concert, her last before she was murdered in March 1995. In the second, Selena wears a white sequined gown and has her hair up.
The Quintanilla family worked with Funko Pop in creating the figurines.
“I am excited to partner with Funko on this release celebrating Selena’s ongoing legacy,” Suzette Quintanilla said in a media release. Suzette is the late star’s sister. “These Funko Pop products honor some of the most influential musicians and I am humbled to have Selena be part of this historic line showcasing her place in pop culture.”
Other musicians with Funko Pop dolls modeled after them include Britney Spears, Billy Idol, Post Malone, Morrissey, and Ed Sheeran.
The “Rocks: Selena (Burgundy Outfit)” sells for $10.99 on amazon.com and entertainmentearth.com, although Amazon’s listing is marked “currently unavailable.”
Funko is a leading creator of licensed pop culture products, known for its big-head vinyl dolls that capture the iconic looks of top stars.
“Our aim is to provide consumers tangible ways to take their fandom offline,” reads the About Funko statement on its website.
A Corpus Christi native, Selena became an international Tejano star in the 1980s and 1990s as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos and then as a solo performer. She was known as the “Queen of Tejano Music.”
