The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center in Corpus Christi received a $500,000 donation from AEP Texas, the electricity company that supplies the city with power. The money will help provide care for uninsured and underinsured patients.
Named after a civil rights champion and Corpus Christi doctor, the Garcia clinic is part of Christus Spohn Health System. It opened in 2017 next to the old Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital on the city’s westside. The old hospital building will eventually be torn down as part of the health system’s $325 million strategic plan. Its trauma and emergency room were moved to Spohn Shoreline.
Health care is a key focus of the AEP Foundation, which was founded to fund health care, education, and environmental stewardship.
"The AEP Foundation's support helps enable our medical team at the health center to deliver the highest level of patient care," said Karen Bonner, vice president of philanthropy at Christus Spohn in a news release. “Their funds will help improve the health of individuals with limited resources who may have never visited a doctor's office.”
