GROW Local South Texas recently received a $100,000 sustaining grant from the Port Industries of Corpus Christi, which will be paid out over a three-year period.
“This gift allows GROW Local South Texas to concentrate on the programs required to GROW the local food system and shore up its operational budget,” said GROW Local executive director Aislynn Campbell in a news release. “It’s a fantastic example of corporate responsibility and commitment to creating a healthier place for everyone in South Texas.”
GROW Local is a member-based nonprofit founded in 2013 to cultivate a healthy community by growing the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable foods. Initiatives include the Corpus Christi Downtown Farmers Market, the GROW Local STX Learning Garden, annual Farm-to-Table Dinner, monthly education programs, the annual South Texas Backyard Chicken Coop Tour and locally sourcing restaurants and grocery stores.
Port Industries, which granted the organization $51,000 in 2015, is a Coastal Bend alliance made up of refiners, chemical and bulk material manufacturers, rig fabricators, energy providers and supporting distribution and terminal facilities located in Nueces, San Patricio and Kleberg counties.
