Padre Island beaches remain closed until further notice as Nueces County and Corpus Christi emergency workers begin to clean up in the aftermath of Hurricane Hanna. The Category 1 hurricane made landfall in the Coastal Bend at about 5 p.m. Saturday, July 25.
The T-head and concrete walkway at Bob Hall pier were swept out to sea and most of the picnic shelters along the adjacent strip off the beach were destroyed by the first hurricane of the season. Harbor Del Sol Marina on Corpus Christi Bay also received extensive damage.
Hanna has since moved west and south into Mexico as a tropical depression.
The storm produced about 2-3 inches of rain in and around Corpus Christi by 7 a.m. Sunday, July 26, according to the National Weather Service. North Beach was flooded as were streets across Corpus Christi. Thousands were left without power Sunday evening.
In downtown Corpus Christi, a storm surge flooded the first floor of the Art Museum of South Texas. After cleanup on Monday, the museum hopes to reopen on Tuesday, July 28.
The Texas State Aquarium will be closed until at least Tuesday due to flooding, which caused some damage and left extensive debris on the grounds. Debris was also strewn across downtown Corpus Christi.
According to the National Weather Service, Hanna brought in 5 feet of storm surge that washed over beaches on Padre Island and smashed boats in marinas.
An assessment by the U.S. Coast Guard deemed Corpus Christi lucky.
“Due to the storm path having turned more south than expected, Corpus Christi was spared from more extensive damage,” said Lt. Logan Swan, Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 aircraft commander.
The Coast Guard flew two survey flights over the area on Sunday.
