Corpus Christi will no longer lack a Lacks. The most prominent furniture chain in South Texas recently announced plans for a June 19 grand opening at its 12th Texas location. The 32,500-square-foot building will be located at 4330 South Padre Island Drive, where a staff of 25-30 people will work.
The closest Lacks to Corpus Christi is in Alice.
The store began 83 years ago in McAllen, where it sold home supplies and auto parts. It was founded in 1935 by Russian immigrant Sam Lack, who came to the United States aboard the Lusitania when he was 13 years old.
The chain is still family-owned and -operated. Lack’s son-in-law, Myles Aaronson, joined the company in 1949. He purchased the Weslaco store from Lack and began expanding. His branch of the company was named Lacks Associated Valley Stores Inc. The name changed to Lacks Valley Stores Ltd. in 1995. Aaronson’s son, Myles, took over soon after.
Lacks can be found across South Texas from Laredo to Brownsville and soon Corpus Christi. The stores sell furniture, appliances, electronics, mattresses, and home accessories. According to its website, the company prides itself on community involvement and support of a variety of local nonprofit organizations.
