The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 mid-term elections is here. Tuesday, Oct. 9, marks the final day people can become eligible to have a say in who runs the government from the Coastal Bend to Washington, D.C., for the next two years.
Early voting begins Oct. 22 and ends Nov. 2. Mail-in ballots are available until Nov. 26. Deadline to submit a mail-in ballot is Election Day, Nov. 6.
To register in person, visit the Nueces County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office at 901 Leopard St., Suite 301, by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Local races of interest include mayor and eight City Council seats, which together drew 30 candidates. Four are vying to upset Mayor Joe McComb, who is up for re-election after winning a special election May 6, 2017. That race was held to fill the vacancy left by former Mayor Dan McQueen, who resigned 37 days after winning his election in 2016. McQueen is one of the five candidates for the position this year.
Also on the mayoral ticket are Aislynn Campbell, founder and executive director of GROW Local South Texas; Michael Hall, an engineering consultant; and Ray Madrigal de Pancho Villa, a retired photographer and frequent candidate for local office. Formerly known as Ray Madrigal, he changed his name to de Pancho Villa before filing for office this time around.
Also on the ballot are the races for U.S. Senate, the governor’s office, and Congressional District 27, currently held by Republican Michael Cloud of Victoria. That seat, too, was recently filled by a special election after the incumbent resigned under a cloud of controversy.
