The Del Mar College Board of Regents named Libby Averyt as its newest member, filling an at-large position left vacant by Tim McCampbell when he resigned in December. Averyt is the chief development officer for the United Way of the Coastal Bend and former publisher of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. One of three finalists for the position, her term will run through 2022. She was sworn in March 5.
“Today’s selection was a tough one for the board, given the excellent qualifications of the candidates we interviewed,” said Carol A. Scott, chair of the school’s Board of Regents. “In the end, we decided that Ms. Averyt’s extensive community involvement and experience … will serve her well on the board. Combined with her wealth of knowledge and familiarity with this region, she stands out as our best choice.”
After retiring from 30 years on the local daily paper, where she worked her way up from reporter to publisher, Averyt was named to head the United Way in 2017. She is also the incoming chair of the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
In the past, she has served on the boards of Charlie’s Place Recovery Center, the Texas State Aquarium, and South Texas Public Broadcasting. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in communications from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
“I understand the importance that Del Mar brings to this community in terms of providing a skilled workforce and lifelong learners,” Averyt said at her swearing-in ceremony. “I want to be a part of that future in helping Corpus Christi and all of South Texas be more successful.”
