Whether you want to hike, bike, birdwatch, sightsee or just connect with the great outdoors, Port Aransas Nature Center is the perfect destination.
The nature preserve encompasses 1,217 acres of what was once Charlie’s Pasture on Port Street in Port Aransas. It was named after early resident Charlie Bujan who allowed locals to graze their cattle on his property.
The nature preserve contains three miles of hiking and biking trails, viewing towers, public restrooms and a shaded pavilion. Tidal flats provide feeding areas and important habitat for shorebirds and endangered and threatened species. A viewing tower overlooking the wetland areas around Salt Island are especially popular with birders.
The preserve is open from dawn to dusk, 7 days a week. Be prepared to leave before it gets dark! Remember: take only picture and leave only footprints.
Tips for making the most of your day at the nature preserve
As a rule of thumb for comfortably and safely making your way through a nature preserve, you should make sure to wear bug repellent and closed-toed walking shoes. Bring along water and be sure to keep well hydrated for the duration of your visit. Only walk on designated trails and please keep volume to a minimum out of respect other visitors and the wildlife. Carry a phone with you for emergencies, but please keep the ringer on silent while in the preserve.
Keep a safe distance from wild animals. Expect to see plenty of birds, insects and even reptiles. It is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of an alligator, so beware! The animals will not bother you if you don’t bother them.
There are two entrances to the Preserve: the end of Port Street and off State Highway 361 near Mustang Beach Airport.
You can find more guidelines and information online at the City of Port Aransas website.
