The Corpus Christi YWCA plans to unveil the city’s newest mural at a ceremony May 28. The woman-themed artwork is the latest by Corpus Christi artists Sandra Gonzalez and Monica Marie Garcia.
The vibrant, colorful community mural on the Caller-Times building, “Endless Sunset: The Colors of Our City,” is another Gonzalez masterpiece. Gonzalez teaches art at West Oso High School. Garcia, also a commercial muralist, teaches art at K-Space Contemporary gallery downtown.
Titled “Powerful Together,” the mural represents female leaders in the community as well as the different YWCA programs available. The Southside mural at 4601 Corona Drive promotes the YWCA mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
During the past seven months, the community has come together to help paint parts of the mural. Gonzalez’s high school students joined in.
YWCA USA CEO and President Alejandra Y. Castillo, Esq. is expected to attend the unveiling, which is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28.
The YWCA is one of the largest and oldest women’s organizations in the nation. It serves 2.2 million women and girls across the country through its 210 associations.
