New polling locations will be set up in Nueces County for early voting, which begins Oct. 13, a week earlier than usual. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott added an additional week to the usually two-week-long early voting period to accommodate COVID-19 regulations and avoid long waiting lines to vote in the upcoming Nov. 3 general election.
As this is a presidential election, voter turnout is expected to be much higher than usual during both early and Election Day voting.
Polling places are being moved from smaller, high-traffic areas to larger venues, such as the American Bank Center, to accommodate social distancing, said Nueces County Clerk Kara Sands.
The Flour Bluff High School Maintenance Building will replace the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, a high-traffic polling place that is much smaller.
Nueces County commissioners voted to raise the pay for poll workers during a recent meeting. Pay was raised to $14 an hour for lead clerks and presiding judges and $12 an hour for additional clerks. Each polling place should have one lead clerk and five clerks.
