U.S. Navy Capt. Phillip Brock took over command of Naval Air Station Corpus Christi during a change-of-command ceremony at the facility July 20. He replaces Capt. Steve Banta, who has been in charge at NASCC for the past three years. Banta is retiring after a 26-year career in the Navy.
A native of Ellington, Connecticut, Brock earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Norwich University in Vermont in 1994. That same year, he reported to Fighter Squadron 31 (VF-31) at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego before deploying aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).
In 1996, he was selected to attend flight school in Pensacola, Florida. He completed advanced multi-engine training with the VT-31 Wise Owls at NAS-CC, receiving his Naval Aviator wings in 1998. He completed his initial P-3C training at Patrol Squadron 30 (VP-30) in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1999.
Brock’s distinguished career includes deployment in Iraq, serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff while completing a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, and serving as executive officer and commanding officer of Training Squadron 3. He also served in Yokosuka, Japan, as deputy chief of staff of the Theater Anti-Submarine Warfare.
Brock’s decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, three Navy Achievement Medals, and various other campaign, service and unit awards.
