A new fire station is being built at 6226 Ayers St. near Saratoga Boulevard. As part of a 2008 bond project, Fire Station No. 18 will cost about $1.8 million and include a single-story building with concrete paving drives, a parking area, new utilities and more.
The city broke ground on the facility Oct. 19 with former District 3 Councilwoman Priscilla Leal joining Fire Chief Robert Rocha to turn over the ceremonial shovels of dirt. Leal retired early after serving four terms on the council due to complications from a stroke. The station, which should be completed by the summer of 2017, is in District 3 and was something for which Leal fought as a member of the council in 2008.
Joining the 17 other fire stations that serve the city, this latest addition, like all the others, will house a fire truck staffed by a captain, a driver and at least two firefighters. Captains wear yellow helmets, while drivers and firefighters wear red helmets. Chiefs of all levels wear white helmets.
Corpus Christi’s fire department regularly performs free home safety inspections upon request. Free fire safety presentations are also available for individuals, groups and organizations.
