
Batting cages for the Hooks at Whataburger Field along with a new pavilion at Driscoll Children’s Hospital and a slew of new apartment complexes top the list of $52 million in building permit requests submitted within a single week in Corpus Christi.
From apartments to hamburgers to batting cages to hospital pavilions, permit requests filed in the city’s development department certainly added up during the last days of August. A total of $52.5 million in construction is planned for Corpus Christi, according to plans filed Aug. 26-Sept. 2.
The biggest of those requests was made by Driscoll Children’s Hospital, which plans to build a $34.1 million pavilion at 3533 S. Alameda. The pavilion will be home to a new pediatric intensive care unit that has been years in the planning. The two-story addition will also house a new outpatient surgery center and an outpatient lab.
The Calallen Apartments at 14838 Northwest Blvd. filed seven requests ranging from $2.1 million to $1.8 million for a total of $8.4 million in construction. The project includes four apartment buildings, a maintenance building, a cabana, an office and a clubhouse.
Vick’s Famous Hamburgers wants to build at 626 N. Port Ave. for a total of $350,000, while the Islamic Society of Southern Texas plans for $855,000 in new construct at 7341 McArdle. The Hooks plan to spend $450,000 for batting cages and practice facilities at Whataburger Field. PlainsCapital Bank plans a new building at 5921 Saratoga Blvd. totaling $2.2 million.

The city’s development department also issued permits. Of the 32 issued, 24 were new commercial for The District at Timbergate. Each was issued for $14,616 for a total of $350,784. The District at Timbergate is a $26.1 million apartment complex. The original permit for that amount was issued in January 2015.
