Vaccinations to continue in Coastal Bend through 2024
The availability of COVID-19 vaccines in Nueces County just got a shot in the arm from the Texas Department of State Health Services. An $18 million grant from the DSHS to the Nueces County Public Health District guarantees vaccinations will be administered at least through June 30, 2024.
“These funds will give the Health District the resources needed to get everyone in our community who wants a COVID-19 vaccine to get vaccinated, quickly and equitably,” Public Health Director Annette Rodriguez said in a statement. To receive the funds, the county must submit a work plan to increase COVID-19 vaccination capacity across the area, including in high-risk and underserved populations. This will also ensure safe administration and provide equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the county.“This over $18 million grant from the Department of State Health Services will offer our Health District a significant step forward to serve our residents city-wide and vaccinate the high-risk and the underserved,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said. “The grant will allow anyone in our community who wants a vaccine to receive one.”
As of Monday morning, May 3, the percentage of the population in Nueces County that has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine was at 48.7 percent. The percentage of fully vaccinated residents was at 38 percent. The population of Nueces County over the age of 16 is 284,366, according to the Texas COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker.
