Nueces County employees might be asked to work from home through Sept. 30. County Judge Barbara Canales recently issued an order to department heads and elected officials to determine which of their employees can execute their job functions remotely, away from county offices.
Recently, the Motor Vehicle Registration offices in the Nueces County Courthouse and Bishop were closed due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in the workplace.
According to Canales, the order is an effort to safeguard the health of county employees and the public they serve, minimizing the spread of COVID-19 and addressing employee positive cases. All employees working remotely will be required to document their hours.
The order also states that it is in response to the delta variant of the virus, which is more infectious and spreads more quickly than earlier variants. In addition, the rate of hospitalizations in Nueces County due to the virus is higher now than it was in 2020.
