Don your masks and gloves. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet has opened for business in Corpus Christi with fully stocked shelves. Several hundred shoppers looking for cleaning supplies and other household goods lined up Wednesday, April 15, for the grand opening of the store, which moved into the old Toys "R" Us building at 1220 Airline Road.
While it might not seem like a good idea to open a new store during a pandemic that has everyone staying at home, Ollie’s loss prevention manager, Richard Reid, disagreed. In fact, the national chain opened three other stores across the United States the same day as the Corpus Christi location.
“We have all the items people need,” Reid told reporters covering the opening. “It’s a perfect time to have the store open.”
Only 50 customers are allowed in the store at any time. Red Xs are placed 6 feet apart throughout the store and at checkout lines to help people with social distancing. Outside, chalk marked off safe distances for people waiting to get in.
Only every other register is open to give customers plenty of room to social distance while waiting to check out. The store cleans all its carts between use as well as all touchpoints in the store throughout the day.
The store is open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. The first hour of opening on Mondays and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m., is reserved for elderly shoppers.
