The city of Corpus Christi will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the restoration of Packery Channel at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7.
In attendance at the event will be U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, U.S. Rep. Michael Cloud, Texas Rep. Todd Hunter, FEMA Texas Recovery Office Director Tracey Phillips, and numerous Corpus Christi leaders.
Damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Packery Channel was approved for funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in September 2021 to restore the area. FEMA allocated $13.5 million to reconstruct the channel’s infrastructure, which was originally built in 2006, and repair walkways damaged by the hurricane.
“The reconstruction of the Packery Channel along with the construction of Park Road 22 Bridge will serve as a catalyst for economic development in Corpus Christi,” Mayor Paulette Guajardo said. “This marks another day for Corpus Christi in beautifying our city, providing advancements to our infrastructure, and positively impacting the lives of every resident and visitor.”
Due to COVID-19 precautions, the event will not be open to the public but can be viewed online on the city's Facebook page and its YouTube page.
