Calling all muralists! The Port of Corpus Christi is taking applications from local artists to create a mural for the lobby of its new administration building currently under construction. Partnering with the Weingarten Art Group, the port is asking that letters of interest, a mural concept, and past work examples be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Friday, March 26, to be considered for the two-mural project. Both will be produced in vinyl and mounted to interior walls.
A panel will select five finalists to proceed to the next stage: creating digitally formatted designs for final consideration. The two chosen will each receive an honorarium of $3,500. Both the building and the two murals are expected to be completed by this summer.
One mural will be on the first-floor landing on the east stairwell and highly visible at night from outside through the building’s half brick, half-glass façade. Size will be 11 feet wide by 12 feet 6 inches tall.
The other mural will be installed on the west stairwell, also on the first-floor landing. It will stand at 10 feet 1 inch wide and 12 feet 10 inches tall.
The $3,500 honorarium covers use of the artwork, including display and online and print versions for commercial purposes. Artists will not be responsible for the cost of fabrication or installation.
The artwork must do the following:
- add color and vibrancy to the site
- include representational or abstract elements
- show inspiration of the area’s local culture, people, history, industry, nature and/or wildlife
All themes and subjects are welcome with the exception of those that are political or religious in nature, according to the rules. Artists, whether working alone or in a team, must be over 18 years of age and reside in one of the following counties: Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, Kennedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio, or San Patricio.
