Heavy rains, flooding also threaten Rockport and other Coastal Bend areas
Nueces County issued a Declaration of Local Disaster and roads were closed due to flooding from heavy rainfall this week in Corpus Christi, Rockport, and other Coastal Bend communities. A flood watch is in effect until the evening of Friday, July 9, according to the National Weather Service. An accumulation of up to 3 inches is expected through Friday and Saturday.
Major flooding has occurred along Oso Creek in Corpus Christi. The creek crested on Friday afternoon and is expected to fall below flood stage Saturday afternoon.
The Rockport area has received over a foot of rain between Wednesday and Friday, according to some reports. A flash-flood emergency was issued on Wednesday. The area remains under a flood warning as of Friday afternoon.
The state sent Texas Task Force One and the Texas Department of Public Safety sent a Marine unit to help with the disaster.
“The severe storms hitting our South Texas and Coastal Bend communities pose a serious threat of flash flooding and river flooding,” Gov. Greg Abbott said when issuing the disaster declaration. He placed state resources on standby to support local response.
Residents experiencing a flood situation are encouraged to call a Nueces County hotline at 361-888-0111. The public is requested to document personal instances of flooding by taking photos. In addition, residents are warned to exercise caution, monitor local weather forecasts, and secure outdoor items and trash receptacles.
The National Weather Service warns motorists to avoid high-water areas and not cross barricades or drive through flooded areas. Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flooddeaths occur in vehicles.
The weekend weather is expected to be hot and muggy with scattered showers.
