The new $1.9-billion steel mill near Sinton is holding an open application event for job seekers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Sinton Community Center, 1301 E. Sinton St. Steel Dynamics Inc. of Fort Wayne, Indiana, plans to start hiring for at least some of the expected 600 positions by the end of this year. About 75 employees are currently on site.
Construction is underway on the plant, which should be completed sometime in 2021. It is expected to produce 3 million tons of flat-rolled steel a year when in full production mode.
“It’s a very unique mill,” said Mark Millett, president and CEO of Steel Dynamics, in a video on the company’s website. “It’s going to be able to provide products not available within the U.S. today. It broadens SDI’s portfolio and allows us to penetrate the southwest market of the U.S. and the growing market within Mexico.”
Sinton was chosen for the mill's site in 2019 over Victoria and Brownsville in Texas. Sites in Louisiana and New Mexico also were under consideration. One major reason the small Coastal Bend community won out was because of its proximity to the Port of Corpus Christi, the third-largest port in tonnage in the United States.
Job interviews will not be conducted at the two-day application event.
