Electric automaker Tesla recently posted employment opportunities for the Corpus Christi area. The Austin-based company is considering a site near Driscoll in western Nueces County for a proposed $375 million refining plant that would produce lithium hydroxide, a key component of electric automobile batteries. It is also looking at sites in Louisiana and Canada.
As of Jan. 11, the company had not publicly announced a final site selection.
The three positions advertised locally are an area construction manager, a project scheduler, and an area superintendent. The postings give no salary range or application deadline but do state they “will be playing a critical role in the construction of Tesla’s first lithium refinery plant(s) near Corpus Christi.”
Tesla's proposed Nueces County site lies within the Robstown Independent School District’s boundaries. In December, the district’s school board approved a tax incentive package for Tesla under Chapter 313 of the Texas tax code. Although that law expired on Jan. 1, the agreement between the company and RISD remains in effect, as the State Comptroller's Office received and approved Tesla’s application before the expiration date.
Tesla had also requested tax abatements from Nueces County under Chapter 312 of the state’s tax laws but withdrew that application earlier this month.
