A mega-drive-through site for COVID-19 vaccine distribution reached its capacity of 2,500 people before 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15. Cars were lined up two hours before vaccinations were scheduled to begin at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds, 1213 Terry Shamsie Blvd. in Robstown. Distribution is first come, first served and will continue starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, until all the vaccines are gone. No online pre-registration is open for this shipment.
The city already successfully distributed 4,000 shots directly into the arms of people who waited in their cars for hours to get their first doses Jan. 10-12. Vaccinations are being given to those who meet eligibility requirements in Phase 1A and 1B of the state of Texas' vaccine distribution plan. Group 1A includes all healthcare workers and first responders. Group 1B includes those 65 and older as well as people 16 and older who have chronic medical conditions.
As the Moderna vaccine is not authorized for those 18 and younger, the 16- to 18-year-olds who qualify cannot be vaccinated Jan. 15-16.
Anyone who has gotten vaccinated for another disease, like the flu, should wait 14 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales announced that the mega-drive-throughs will continue as vaccines arrive.
