Evening classes to gain the skills needed to fill one of the many pipeline jobs in the Coastal Bend begin at Del Mar College on Feb. 11. Pipeline workers are in high demand, according to the college, which is offering a 72-hour, three-course series that provides students with the fundamentals of pipeline and petrochemical industry skills.
“Pipeline is a critical part of our socioeconomics as related to energy, with the public knowing very little about the industry,” class instructor Louis Lopez said. “The industry spends a lot of time and money training new recruits to learn how to pipeline.”
Lopez is a veteran in the pipeline industry and a retired senior engineering technician from ExxonMobil Pipeline Co.
Students will learn about the history of the pipeline industry, oil fields, pump stations, and oil movements. More advanced level courses are available after completing the introductory program, which will be offered again in the fall.
Classes are 5:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the following categories:
• Introduction to Pipeline and Petrochemical Industry, Feb. 11-March 6
• Pipeline Construction and Operation, April 8-May 1
• Corrosion Control and Regulatory Compliance, May 6-June 3
Registration is held on a first-come, first-served basis and may be done in person at the DMC Center for Economic Development, 3209 S. Staples St., or by calling (361) 698-1328.
