Nicholas brings heavy rain and possible flooding to Coastal Bend

Schools are closed and storm warnings have been issued for Coastal Bend residents by the city of Corpus Christi and Nueces County as Tropical Storm Nicholas heads for the central Gulf Coast. Residents are encouraged to safeguard family, pets, and property. 
Significant rainfall amounts of up to 8 inches are possible, potentially resulting in flash and urban floods as well as isolated river flooding.
“The rains are expected to bring flooding, and I urge all to monitor conditions carefully and take precautions as necessary,” Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales said. “While we are taking immediate action on the beach, heavy, extended rainfall is possible and flooding is possible throughout the county. Conditions may change quickly; take action now to protect your property and loved ones.”
Additional storms are possible through the middle of the week if the system remains over water.
On Saturday, Sept. 11, Gov. Greg Abbott placed resources on standby along the Gulf Coast from Beaumont to the Rio Grande Valley. 
“The state of Texas has deployed resources ahead of this tropical system, which is expected to impact the Gulf Coast beginning on Sunday,” Abbott said. “We will continue to closely monitor this storm and take all necessary precautions to keep Texans safe. I encourage Texans to follow the guidance and warnings of their local officials and be mindful of potential heavy rain and flooding.”
Residents are urged to monitor developments at nhc.noaa.gov and stay tuned to local media for developments and advisories.
School districts closed for Monday, Sept. 13, are Aransas Pass Independent School District, Driscoll ISD, Flour Bluff ISD, Ingleside ISD, Kingsville ISD, Port Aransas ISD, Refugio ISD, Ricardo ISD, Riviera ISD, Robstown ISD, and Tuloso-Midway ISD. For Bishop ISD, both face-to-face and remote instruction are canceled for Sept. 13.
Texas A&M University-Kingsville is also closed Monday, and Del Mar College and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi are closed Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 13-14.
During inclement weather, if you must go out, the city warns: 

  • Do not drive around barricades.
  • Drive more slowly than usual. 
  • Turn on your headlights.
  • Be aware of possible flooding in low-lying areas. 

If you must be on the road, be aware and find an alternative route if you come across flooding.  
Whether driving or walking, when on a flooded road, "Turn Around. Don’t Drown."
