Port Aransas is now part of the World Food Championships. The city just became the partnering city for the state of Texas for the national contest held each year in Alabama.
The largest competition in food sport, the World Food Championships awards $300,000 in prize money. The competition begins in one city in each state. In Texas, that city will be Port Aransas.
As a partner city, Port Aransas will serve as host of food competitions year-round. Competition categories include burgers, seafood and barbecue. The final qualifying event is expected to be part of Beachtoberfest, which was canceled this year because of Hurricane Harvey. Beachtoberfest represents all the festivals and events held in the Coastal Bend in October.
The national championships are held in November in Orange Beach, Alabama. The 2018 championships are set for Nov. 7-11.
All Port Aransas events will be open to the public.
